The cross Saint-Herem

Fontainebleau History, Napoleon I, Napoleon III

In 1660, The governor of the city and of the Palace of Fontainebleau and Captain of the Bière and Brie Forest Hunts, François-Gaspard de Montmorin de Saint-Hérem, erected a cross at this road junction. It was destroyed in 1793 and re-erected in 1827. It was at this junction that Napoleon I awaited Pope Pius VII on 26 November 1804 for the Coronation. In 1863, Emperor Napoleon III requested Alexis Paccard to put up a third stone cross to commemorate this event.
